Gaming Room: Painting Station

I just finished my new painting station. Now everything is ordered and at hand's reach.

Il tavolo per dipingere è finito. Ora ho finalmente tutto sotto mano e in ordine.

Gaming Table 4: Building the TableTop

Continues from here.
I again went in that Brico Store I mentioned before to buy another 210 x 150 x 0,8 cm plywood sheet, divided in 3 pieces of 70 x 150 cm.
I took 5 fir beams (20mm x 20mm x 2000mm) to make the end tabletop supports, and another 2 beams (20mm x 50mm x 1500mm) to strengthen the middle board.  The plywood cost me around 59€, while the fir was around 16€.

Lay down the plywood, keeping the boards in the right order. This way the grain will make a nice, continuous pattern on all the tabletop.

Turn the first piece upside down and mark where the wood will go using a pencil (do not use a pen).
Repeat the process on all the boards.
Finally cut the fir to size.

Infine tagliate a misura l'abete.
Use white glue (vinil-based) and attach all the beams to the tabletop. Use wood clamps and some smooth scrap wood to avoid leaving marks on the table surface.

When it's all done, flip all the pieces and smooth the edges with a small handplane or 250 grit sandpaper. Sand all the surface scratches too.

Finally, apply your finish of choice. I used linseed oil, but I plan on adding beeswax later.
This is a picture of the first D&D session I did last Wednesday evening. New table, new game!

Nuova tavola, nuovo gioco!

Gaming Table 3: Recessed Playing Surface

Continues from here.
I went in a Brico Store, a supermarket that sells everything for diy, to purchase an 8mm plywood sheet. I went in that store because it was the only place with a saw that could cut plywood with a high precision (the tolerance was of 1 mm). While I was there I took 4 fir wood pieces (15mm x 50mm x 2000mm) to make the perimeter support for the plywood.  The plywood cost me around 50€, while the fir went for about 10€.
Next I took a discarded wooden plank and sawed it using a circular saw bench to get 3 boards approximately 16mm thick. Than I planed them a little to get them smooth.
You can and should skip this by buying 7 of the fir pieces mentioned above, but they didn't have enough, so I simply made them myself. Those will be hidden reinforce, so you can take some lower grade wood or even some scrap metal if you wish.
You will need nails to keep the plywood in place, LOTS of screws for the railing (the perimeter support), a saw to make clean precise cuts (I suggest a fretsaw), 120 grit sanding paper and 6 T metal plates. A small hand plane is highly recommended, but it's not required.
The last thing you need is a finish.
I choose cooked linseed oil because it's cheaper, easier to apply, gives the wood a more natural feeling when touched and it's easier to repair than varnish.
The drawback is that it gives no protection to the wood.

Quindi state attenti.
This is the inside. As you can see, the plywood was cut in the corner to make space for the leg. Note that you can put the plywood in only from the underside of the table due to the bolts.

The underside.
Once you've cut the plywood, it's time to cut the supports to fit and round wood edges using the hand plane or the sandpaper.
Lastly, screw them to the apron.

My advice is to use about 1 screw every 20cm, and add some at the ends. The screws will be heavily loaded, so be wise and use your judgement to avoid splitting the wood by using too many screws or using too few and compromise the structural integrity of your table.
Take into account the length of the screws too: they should go at least 1cm and a half into the apron.

In this picture you can see how the rails meet the legs. The rails must be cut to fit.

Dettaglio su come le gambe incontrano i supporti.
Next, attack the reinforce beams to the underside. Strengthen the joints using the T plates.

Nail down the plywood to the rails.
Now pass the sandpaper over all the apron, legs and rails. This is necessary to make the wood very smooth, and to get rid of any bump or scratch you've made during the building process.
Now apply your finish of choice. Congratulations, your table is ready for use!
Continues here with the removable tabletop.

Congratulazioni, il tavolo è pronto all'uso!
Prosegue qui con la superficie rimovibile.

Gaming Table 2: Apron and Legs

Continues from here.
Once I got the lumber, I put the basic frame together.
I started by joining the legs with the short apron pieces using white glue (vinilic glue) and 4 dowels.
If you're unfamiliar with woodworking, I suggest to pay a visit to woodgears, an excellent site to learn many interesting things that can be done with wood. It has loads of plans too.
Next, I drilled the legs and the long apron rails to match. I then proceded to fasten the apron rails to the legs using carriage bolts with hex nuts, washers and split-washers.
Continues here.

The main structure.
The head of the bolts. They have a square metal part under the heads.
How the bolts are fixed inside.
Note: those are 10 mm thick, 12 cm long bolts, and they seem tiny compared to the frame.
The short rail. Note that the wood has no holes in it: the dowels don't go all the way through the wood. (by the way, I used four 5 cm long, 8 mm thick beech dowels for each leg).

Gaming Table 1: get the lumber

I bought the wood for the gaming table! Wohooo!!!
Near my home it's rather difficult to find good lumber retailers. The wood is usually very pricey (and often crooked) and the sellers rather rude.
Luckily I found a local bulk retailer that sells wood to carpenters and bricklayers, Incerti Legnami. They have mainly fir, and the lumber is rather rough. Fortunately, they have a lot of machines to cut, smooth and impregnate the wood, so I asked them to plane a couple of boards.
The service was truly outstanding, considered that I bought only 3 planks. Most bulk retailers would have dismissed my request as too small to be worth it, while they were very kind and tried to give me the cheapest option out of all the possible ones. They even let me choose personally the lumber, and that allowed me to get the most straight and good looking boards.

Now, onto the lumber dimension:

  • 2 planks 96 x 19 x 1360 mm
  • 2 planks 96 x 19 x 2010 mm
  • 4 legs 85 x 80 x 780 mm
Dimensioni del legno:
  • 2 tavole 96 x 19 x 1360 mm
  • 2 tavole 96 x 19 x 2010 mm
  • 4 travetti 85 x 80 x 780 mm

The wood cost me 30 Euros (planing and sawing to dimension included), including VAT (21%). Considering that at the Brico superstore I would have spent between 80 and 90 Euros for the exact same material, I can conclude to be fully satisfied. Next post: assembly!

Prossimo post: l'assemblaggio!

Gaming Table: Schetches

I'm in the middle of my gaming room furnishing, so I thought I'd share with you the final plans for the gaming table, the centerpiece and hearth of my gaming room (which has been inspired by Geek Chic).
The inner gaming surface will be 120x180cm, with the upper tabletop being 158x218x2cm.
The legs will be 9x9x78cm, so the table will have a total height of 80cm.
The apron will be 9.5cm high, so the lower part of the apron will be 68.5cm from the ground.

The table apron and legs will be made out of fir, while the top and bottom will be plywood.
I'm gonna glue the short aprons to the legs and put some dowels in to strengthen the bond, while the long aprons will be held in place from carriage bolts for ease of disassembly.

The top will come off by simply rising it. The internal height will be around 7cm.

The recessed table will be glued onto 4 wood beams, and those will be screwed to the apron with drywall screws. I'll probably glue some reinforce beams underneath.

Gaming Room: Planning the Furniture

It has been quite a while since my last post, but I've been busy working at my house. I've obtained a room to use as my personal gaming den, so this week I'll go hunting for appropriate furniture.
I think I'll get most of what I need at Ikea. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to buy a whole bunch of mahogany furniture (cabinets, shelves, big table, secretarie) but that stuff is very expensive and hard to find second-hand. So I'm restricted to fir, pine and MDF.

I'll need a couple of glass display cases, so I'll buy 2 Ikea Detolf. I plan to mount them on a cubic mini-shelf, in order to rise it by 40-42 cm (it's 163 cm tall). I'll also make it dust-proof.

For books and big items I'm tempted by the Gorm shelf. It's cheap and very sturdy.

I'm still unsure about the lights: both the Kramare (top) and the Tross (down) are good...
