Review: WWII German Infantry (Wargames Factory)

I've recently been at Lucca Comics and Games, a massive gaming expo in Lucca, near Firenze.
Here I bought a lot of miniatures, including a WWII German Infantry box from Wargames Factory.

The minis are well sculpted. Details are much sharper than the older Wargames Factory boxes, not to mention that there's almost no mold lines.
The bits go together rather well, even if sometimes it's difficult to picture what arms are intended to be coupled. There are loads of weapons, including Panzershrecks, granades, Kar98Ks with and without muzzle granades (it was the standard bolt-action rifle), Gewehr 98s (semi automatic rifles), MP40s, Lughers and MG34s, along with an hefty amount of ammo boxes. The only weapons that are missing are the mortair, MG43, flamer and STG44. These would be a nice bonus.
Those miniature are 1/56 scale, approximatively 28 mm tall. All weapons are tiny, but their size is exactly what the real thing would look at this scale.
I payed 18€ for 30 miniatures (1 box), even if it usually retails for 20€ (I got a 10% off RRP).

Let me point out this: they're good miniatures in their own right. For their price, they are simply awesome.

I'm gonna use them for Operation Squad and other random games. I've still 10 bodies left...

Boh!

Review: Operation Squad WWII

Here it finally come the long awaited review for this game. The first impression can be found here.

The game confirmed itself a fun and and fairly intuitive one, suitable for both novice and experienced players.
Operation Squad finds its natural competitor in Infinity. Both are 28mm skirmish, both use a system of simultaneous reactions, and both benefit from a "dense" table. They differ in setting, basic mechanics and flexibility.

When I asked Chiara "What do you think of Operation Squad?", she said: "well, I liked it, is a bit like Infinity, only without moving all the soldiers at once."
And that's the point of view of the neophyte.
I like the game because it allows a different tactical approach by Infinity.
OS maintains a high pace throughout the game, even higher than Infinity. This is both good (no downtime) and bad (I had to wait a pee-stop to make coffee).
The system does not allow actions to Ramboing as in Infinity and there are fewer actions available. This implies a lower complexity, but also a lower "cool factor".

Another positive side is that you can play while sitting, on a 60x60cm table. We used 1/72 scale models, but I think the size of the table is more suited to the use of 15mm minis: lower cost and greater realism.

Operation Squad: First Review

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I tried the Operation Squad basic rules, using minis in 1/72 scale and the Zombies expansion (downloadable from the Operation Squad forum) with 28 mm minis.
First impressions were very good.

The alternated activation is similar to Dystopian Wars, while the action-reaction system is Infinity-like.
Fire is really deadly, even more than in Infinity. If you want to keep your men alive, stay in cover!

Gaming length is meh... For me it's too slow, but it depends massively on our inexperience and limited time (90 minutes at best). It could go much faster as we play it again.

Game seems to offer a great base for Zombie Games (it already offer a Zombie expansion). It needs just a downsize of squads, some rules to make Zeds automatically operated (a lot like ATZ) and some more bookkeeping (ammos and grenades, mostly).

Dystopian Wars: Rules Update Revision and Cruisers

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Last week I played Dystopian Wars with my girl, using the updated rules from Spartan Games.
I used KoB, while she lead the FSA Navy.
We used all the goodies in the starter set, plus the game cards, in a 90 min battle.
I won the game with a whopping Crushing Victory (118 VPs to 38 VPs).
My tactic was to attack the frigates instead of wasting my firepower on the Battleship or the Cruisers.
Now, let's talk about my impressions.
The American BB is still a floating fortress. She had 3 torpedo attacks and a linked shot from 3 turrets of the Britannia's BB in RB3 with no effects, even if it wasn't sporting a shield generator.
Britannia's bombers fared well, playing "Cat and Mouse" with the FFs.
KoB's Cruisers are still worthless.
Excellent the Guardian Generator fitted on the KoB's BB: It finally made this ship cool AND useful.
All my respect to the new boarding rules: they got the game flow much faster.
Now, on to the models: In this period I painted all the turrets, generators, missle racks, bombers and cruisers I had. For photos, scroll down the page.
The battlefield.
FSA BB and Cruisers.
KoB's BB and Cruisers.
Kob's bombers.

Infinity: Swiss Guard with Missle Launcher

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here I am again with an Infinity piece: the infamous wis Guard with Missile Launcher, for the Human Sphere's superpower, PanOceania.
The mini is great, no molding lines, precise and neat details on all the 6 pieces (body, left arm, right arm and3 antennas).
From a gaming perspective the model must be pinned; unfortunately this isn't a viable option for antennas, as they're super-cool but fragile as usual.
The palette to use for the piece was the greatest problem for me: should I've used a camo scheme, a light palette or a white and green one?
I finally settled for a hot, bright palette, using white, blue and green to tie it with the other PanOceanian troops.
To be honest, I'm not very satisfied with it, but for now it will work good enough: I hate to play with unpainted minis!

Dystopian Wars: First Play and First Island

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm getting rather involved in Dystopian Wars In those days I competed the naval gametable and I decided to build some islands to spice up the surface a bit.
While I was hunting for suitable materials, I stumbled on this aquarium decoration. It was really a lucky find: Scale and Size compatible, and at a reasonable price. The only thing I did was to repaint it slightly better.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yesterday  evening I played my first game with the Dystopian Wars ruleset. I used Britannia, while Chiara got the Americans.
To keep it simple we did not use MARs, Boarding rules, Tiny Tokens, Bombers or Terrain.
The game was over in 75 min (rules explaining and model placing included), and Chiara got a Resounding Victory.
The game is quick and simple, easy to learn but not "brainless". FSA are truly floating fortresses, with excellent long range guns. Fixed arcs are difficult to use, but truly powerful. Britannia's Frigates were a complete surprise, really a must-have. Quick, with good firepower and capable of damaging even the FSA Battleship.
I'm really looking into playing this again. Great game.

Dystopian Wars: unpacking

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Today arrived the order I placed to Maelstrom Games a couple of weeks ago. I ordered everything I needed to start playing: the rulebook, a card deck and two naval groups (Federal States of America and Britannia).
The box as it arrived to my door.
What was in the box. Everything was carefully packed and wrapped with plenty of plastic bubble sheet.
FSA box. Here I found a minor error: they gave me 9 FSA Tiny Flyers instead of 10 and 1 Britannia Tiny Flyer
Britannia box. All right on this, except some minor bubbles on a couple of frigates chimneys.

Gaming Update: the Long Summer

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After several weeks without news, I finally decided to publish a post about my summer.
Without going into too many details I'm pleased by the amount of games I played and by their variety. Unfortunately, this proliferation of recreational activities has taken its tool on time dedicated on modeling and therefore I have not completed any model.
I have played Settlers of Catan, Dungeon Twister, Impetus, Full Thrust and Infinity. I also tried two games I found in a forgotten drawer: Collectable Card Game Harry Potter and Harry Potter and the Magical Stones.
How were them, you might ask... Well, I'm seriously considering reburying them at the bottom of that drawer.
The mechanics are trivial, the strategy simply does not exist and luck rule. The excellent graphics does nothing but increase the frustration and anger for the poor game design.
Moving on to much more satisfactory gaming experience, here are a couple of photos of my game with Chiara at Impetus, which I lost miserably (I was in command of the Celts, she got the Romans).

Dadi e Sudore 2011: Infinity Turnement.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I just returned from Dadi e Sudore 2011, where I went to photograph the Infinity tournament .
The atmosphere was
friendly, relaxed, and the average age was between 25 and 30. I was expecting a younger audience, and I must say that the initial shock was overrided by the atmosphere, and the overall impression was very good.
I just joined the forum Unofficial Italian Infinity (http://infinitythegame.freeforumzone.leonardo.it/forum.aspx?c=163546&f=163546), I hope  to be able to start doing some
"serious" gaming soon.

The last pic is the Demo table for "Braking News", and was hosted by the youngest boy in the hall - I think he was 15... Dunno. However, great demo.

Caledonia Highlanders Army

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm glad to present you my favoutite Infinity army... Ariadna. Fast, brutal and with big and nasty weapons. AP rounds, Dum-dums, template weapons and two-handed swords... would you ask for something else? Well, maybe some Hi-Tech gear would be good, and a better shooting skill could see some good use... but for now Ariadna is my choice. And Caledonia is the most extreem form of it.
John, Alan and Jack Mc.Knize, our brave Caledonian Volunteers.
From left to right: Bateu Mc.Bain (1st Highlander S.A.S.), Orlando Mc.Beth (3rd Highlander Grays), Rob Beowulf (9th Wulver Grenadiers).
