Impetus: Gauls vs Early Imperial Romans (Battle Report)

I fatti.

It has been a while that I played this game, but I consider it significant for two reasons: it made me think about the importance of tactics in wargame and it was the first Impetus game after the earthquake.

The facts.
We played to 400 points; I used the Gauls, dividing my army in 2 commands (center controlled by the Charismatic leader and left side held by a Poor commander).
Chiara used the Romans, under the command of an expert general who became Fair in the first round (double 1 for the initiative).
The Roman cavalry advanced on my right side and in the center, while the legionaries advanced in line. The Roman general moved on its right side to intercept two Gallic cavalry hordes.
The Gauls released a shower of stones and javelins on the Roman cavalry, while the cavalry tried to work around the army on the sides. The Gallic infantry hordes are released one after the other and charge the enemy front. It follows a furious melee in the center, with the first wave of Gauls barely contained by the Roman line, which emerges from the clash in disorder and with some losses, while the bulk of the Gauls advances, still fresh and ready to fight. To make matters worse on the left side of the Romans the allied cavalry was defeated and a Gallic cavalry stand was able to break through the enemy lines. On the right side the Gallic cavalry refuses to engage the Roman legionaries, while preventing their retreat to the main line.
If the match was to be finished I would definitely defeat the Romans, as the situation was tactically compromised.

Considerations
In this game I realized how useful the practice of "soften up" the enemy troops with the shooters is. I also understand how you can effectively perform a flank denial.
I try to explain better: if I can create an effective diversion I can cause the opponent to direct some of their precious troops against it to neutralize it, thus decreasing the number of troops in the main line.
If, on the other hand, the troops on the flank are more mobile than their enemy, they can effectively lock 'em, preventing them from coming in contact and simultaneously denying the chance to return to the main line to boost it.
Another way undoubtedly effective to deny your flank is entrenching few troops, if possible, in an advantageous defensive position, refusing to engage in close combat and leaving a large part of your army free to concentrate its force on the opposite flank.
I know that for some of you I'm writing about something obvious, but for me knowing a concept and fully undertand it are completely different things.
In conclusion I can say that the tactic is an important element in wargaming as much as the strategy (how you compose your army) and luck (the infamous dices).

Summer Downtime

I'm having some issue in taking pics for the blog, or writing on it. I'm sorry, but real life decided to kick in and give me a bit of a non-usable downtime (time I'm not at home with paintings and camera).
Anyway, I got loads of news: my friends gave me a squad of 10 GW Space Marines, 2 GW wizards, a couple of paint pots and an old copy of White Dwarf.
Furthermore my package from Ground Zero Games arrived home. I purchased 2 Intro Fleets (1 Scanfed and 1 UNSC fleets), a dwarf, a female fighter, 2 Nerds/Geeks/Gamers and 4 iconic military guys (hint: Die hard; Rambo; Escape from New York; Terminator).
I'm currently painting my Dystopian Wars KoB Frigates and Tiny Flying Tokens; next I'll takle some Mantic Zombies.
I've built a new painting table out of building scraps from the wood house, while my little brother has took home some nice aluminum boxes. They are being converted into miniature holders. Next project is an hex star mat, out of very cheap black non-woven fabric (2€ each square meter).
Now I'll leave you with some interesting soundtracks I'm collecting for use during my gaming sessions (mainly for Full Thrust).

Sono già state trasformate in valigette porta-miniature.

Female Savage (Mirliton)

Here I have the last mini from the "Future Female Warriors" blister, by Mirliton. I swapped the pistol she had with a  brass spear for a more "conventional" look. I also painted the axe blue for added magic effect.
I'm not satisfied by that mini: I don't like the subject, neither the sculpture. The painting was done in a must-do-it mood, so it's kinda crappy.

Dungeon Twister: Mechanork No.2 (Privateer Press)

Here's again a Privateer Press undead, which will be used as a "count as" Mechanork for Dungeon Twister. (here is the first mini)

(primo)

Dungeon Twister: Minotaur/Troll No.2 (Mirliton)

Here I am again with a mini for Dungeon Twister. This time it's the count-as Troll of the yellow team, a mighty Minotaur!
