Operation Squad: American Paratroopers, German Panzergrenadiers and Modern American Marines

Last Wednesday night I played Operation Squad with my friends Morse (American Paratroopers) and Pise (German Panzergrenadiers).
I planned to sit and manage all the fiddly rules, but they insisted to make me play, so I choose a rather anti-historical faction: modern american Marines.
We took a vehicle (HUMVEE, Jeep Willys and Kubelwaghen) and started a simple free for all.
We shot each other down happily until there were only 3 Germans, 2 Paras and a Marine left, than called it a draw.

Before that, we payed a nice Lotr game: Legolas and Gimli (plus 4 elves and 4 dwarfs) had to take down a Troll of Mordor and a Captain Troll of Mordor. Nice, fast introduction to Lotr:SBG mechanics and eroic actions. This was in preparation for the next week 500 pts battle.

Operation Squad: Zombie Mod - Zombie Night

It's quite a long time I don't write on the blog. This is because I've been very busy actually playing games rather than painting miniatures or writing about 'em.
The pictures refer to my last game of Operation Squad - Zombie Mod.
We've played on the still unfinished table, and managed to squeeze 5 hours of uninterrupted fun out of a rushed setup.
All the photos were taken by my friends, because I forgot to charge the battery of my camera.

Operation Squad: Zombie Mod (testing changes)

I'm testing some tweaks to the official Zombie mod for Operation Squad, to help speeding things up. Nothing major, just a switch from the "alternate reaction system" to the classic IGO-UGO for the zeds. There is an awful lot of them, and the original rules quickly get too slow (there are too many reactions) and require a player to manoeuvre them.
Another change is the speed of recharging weapons. In the original rules you must stay still for the whole round. I changed it allowing for a 10 cm (2 inch) move. It make sense to me: to reload your pistol you can't run, but it doesn't mean you can't move either.
The last change is the Zeds speed. In the original mod, they move 10+D6 cm or something like that. That's great for a few models, but as the numbers of zeds increase, the rolls start to slow down the game dramatically, so I set the speed to 15cm for all the zeds (except Runners, they move 20cm).
As for the zombie appearing on the table, I adopted the Two Hours Wargame All Things Zombies method: each shot generate a Noise Marker. At the end of each turn you roll a D6 for each marker and for a 4+ (3+ on a high-aggro area) you get a zed. Dead simple.

Below there are some photos of the game test. I'm sorry for the awful quality of the pics, but they're made with my crappy mobile phone camera.

Zombie Night

Last Monday I played a game of Operation Horror (mod for Operation Squad) with my friends.
One of 'em took a couple of pics of the game using his phone, so I shamelessly stole borrowed his photos.
We had a blast, in fact they asked me to organize another game. Yay!
That was my side. I had to stop the infection from spreading further (I used the US Infantry).

The evening ended with a late poker and quite a load of beer. Good thing! :)

Review: Operation Squad WWII

Here it finally come the long awaited review for this game. The first impression can be found here.

The game confirmed itself a fun and and fairly intuitive one, suitable for both novice and experienced players.
Operation Squad finds its natural competitor in Infinity. Both are 28mm skirmish, both use a system of simultaneous reactions, and both benefit from a "dense" table. They differ in setting, basic mechanics and flexibility.

When I asked Chiara "What do you think of Operation Squad?", she said: "well, I liked it, is a bit like Infinity, only without moving all the soldiers at once."
And that's the point of view of the neophyte.
I like the game because it allows a different tactical approach by Infinity.
OS maintains a high pace throughout the game, even higher than Infinity. This is both good (no downtime) and bad (I had to wait a pee-stop to make coffee).
The system does not allow actions to Ramboing as in Infinity and there are fewer actions available. This implies a lower complexity, but also a lower "cool factor".

Another positive side is that you can play while sitting, on a 60x60cm table. We used 1/72 scale models, but I think the size of the table is more suited to the use of 15mm minis: lower cost and greater realism.

US Marines in MARPAT camo

US Marines in MARPAT camo (Empress Miniatures).

I choose this very unusual camouflage because I think digital patterns has a distinct ultra-moden feel.

First, I basecoated with Vallejo Iraqi Sand.
Then I washed the mini with Burnt Umber (an artist Watercolor).
Last, I dabbed tiny spots of Vallejo Flat Earth, GW Graveyard Earth and GW Bleached Bone on the mini.

For the Woodland MARPAT I simply added more spots with Vallejo German Field Grey WWII and Vallejo Green Grey.

For the bases, I glued sand on the washers; than I painted it with cheap Burnt Umber acrilic craft paint.
Next step, I drybrushed Mustard and then Ivory.
Finally, I glued some cheap yellow kitchen sponge and painted it Ivory and German Field Grey.

Successivamente ho dato senape e avorio a pennello asciutto.

Operation Squad: First Review

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I tried the Operation Squad basic rules, using minis in 1/72 scale and the Zombies expansion (downloadable from the Operation Squad forum) with 28 mm minis.
First impressions were very good.

The alternated activation is similar to Dystopian Wars, while the action-reaction system is Infinity-like.
Fire is really deadly, even more than in Infinity. If you want to keep your men alive, stay in cover!

Gaming length is meh... For me it's too slow, but it depends massively on our inexperience and limited time (90 minutes at best). It could go much faster as we play it again.

Game seems to offer a great base for Zombie Games (it already offer a Zombie expansion). It needs just a downsize of squads, some rules to make Zeds automatically operated (a lot like ATZ) and some more bookkeeping (ammos and grenades, mostly).

Tutorial: Cheap and Simple Hedge

Lasciatele asciugare.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now that I decided to use the 1/72 scale for my Operation Squad games, I'll need proper scenery.
I don't have much time, so here's what I made.

Materials: green sponge, green wood saw (flock), base (either plastic or cardboard will work). Glue: PVA (white glue).

Cut sponge and bases, than glue'em together.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Squeeze the white glue on the hedge.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Spread it around with a cheap brush.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Put the hedge into a container with the green wood saw.
Fate ruotare il recipiente per qualche secondo.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Roll the container for a bit.
Estraete la siepe e mettetela ad asciugare.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Take out the hedge and let 'em dry.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After long and exhaustive thinking (yeah... whatever!) I decided what factions I'll play in Operation Squad.
I'm Italian, so I'll use Italians. I was thinking about Folgore paratroopers, but Chiara has a soft spot for Bersaglieri (mechanized infantry), so I'll stick with the latter.
Nazis has awesome tank and I own quite a lot of 'em, so Panzergranadier on the list too.
Soviets has a low priority, but I'll buy some of them down the road. After all it's always fun to kick come communist butt!
Now, onto the allied. I don't like 'em a lot. Americans had awful tanks, except for the Jeep and the M3 half-track.
The Brits has some very nice tanks, specially the Churchill, the Tetrarch, the Crocodile and the Matilda. I's a pity that not all the profiles are available. Since I already own a Tetrarch and it's only available with the "Red Devils" list, I'll took those paratroopers.

This is what I decided to buy today at the shop. Unfortunately, there were only two boxes left: German and American Infantry from Italeri. I bought them (obviously).

And now, some photos of my last work, the Italian L3 tankette from DOC Models.

Operation Squad WWII: New Game in Town

Last week I went shopping to Bologna with my girl. While I was there (and after the usual female tour through various clothes shops) I made a short trip to the Goblin Store. With my Christmas money, I decided to buy a Skirmish game for the 2nd World War. Competing for the buy were "Flying Lead" (Ganesha Games) "Operation Squad WWII" and "Flames of War" (ok, not a skirmish but it was tempting). What was the thing that has tipped my chose over Operation Squad? First of all vehicles. I love 'em, and I own a whole lot. But Flying Lead is not very suitable for vehicular combat. In addition, the Ghanesha game system depends too mush on fortune. Personal tastes. Secondly the cost and variety of books and supplements. Do not think that I do not like detailed and precise games. With the choice of equipment, factions, and tanks Operation Squad is very limited, as opposed to Flames of War. The real problem is that the store had a wall of supplements, books and booklets for Fow, and I would not be even able to guess which ones were essential, without the help of the salesman. As they say in dialect, "il toppo stroppia" (too much is bad).

I can not wait to try it. At first glance it seems a good system with some similarities to Infinity (AROs) and others with Impetus (modifiers to the number of dice, and not the value they're giving).

Oh,I was almost forgetting: Happy New Year!
