D&D: Gaming on Skype

Yesterday I got my first D&D game on Skype.
I had a blast, even if the conditions were far from optimized.
This spurred a reflection on what is needed for an enjoyable gaming session on Skype.

Obviously, you need PCs and a good connection ON BOTH SIDES. If the connection is crappy, then you won't be able to enjoy the game due to constant delays and poor image resolution.

It's also good if you can arrange a test beforehand. Don't forget to set up and connect the accounts before actually meeting for the game.

If you're hosting the game, the best place to put the computer is in front of the Dungeon Master's screen. This way the Skype user can see the rest of the party: often communication is made also by facial expressions and gestures.
Loudspeakers are a good addition, since sometimes the caller voice is rather feeble.

You should also consider ambient noise: keep it down to a bare minimum. Also chit-chatting on non-gaming topic makes understanding gaming-related talk difficult.

On the guest side, a headset with microphone is needed to keep resonating noise down. You also should be aware of where you are calling from. A silent place is to be preferred to a noisy one.

Having paper reference sheet and books helps in getting all readily available when needed. Also real dices and a dice tray are better than dice-throwing apps, since the results are readily shown on Skype.

Snacks and beverages are to be kept at arm's length, along with glasses. Remember to shut off your mic when eating, otherwise the chrunching sound can annoy people at the host place.

Those are my 2 cents for now; I hope to have more tips for you soon. Enjoy your gaming!

Gaming Table 4: Building the TableTop

Continues from here.
I again went in that Brico Store I mentioned before to buy another 210 x 150 x 0,8 cm plywood sheet, divided in 3 pieces of 70 x 150 cm.
I took 5 fir beams (20mm x 20mm x 2000mm) to make the end tabletop supports, and another 2 beams (20mm x 50mm x 1500mm) to strengthen the middle board.  The plywood cost me around 59€, while the fir was around 16€.

Lay down the plywood, keeping the boards in the right order. This way the grain will make a nice, continuous pattern on all the tabletop.

Turn the first piece upside down and mark where the wood will go using a pencil (do not use a pen).
Repeat the process on all the boards.
Finally cut the fir to size.

Infine tagliate a misura l'abete.
Use white glue (vinil-based) and attach all the beams to the tabletop. Use wood clamps and some smooth scrap wood to avoid leaving marks on the table surface.

When it's all done, flip all the pieces and smooth the edges with a small handplane or 250 grit sandpaper. Sand all the surface scratches too.

Finally, apply your finish of choice. I used linseed oil, but I plan on adding beeswax later.
This is a picture of the first D&D session I did last Wednesday evening. New table, new game!

Nuova tavola, nuovo gioco!

Gaming Table 3: Recessed Playing Surface

Continues from here.
I went in a Brico Store, a supermarket that sells everything for diy, to purchase an 8mm plywood sheet. I went in that store because it was the only place with a saw that could cut plywood with a high precision (the tolerance was of 1 mm). While I was there I took 4 fir wood pieces (15mm x 50mm x 2000mm) to make the perimeter support for the plywood.  The plywood cost me around 50€, while the fir went for about 10€.
Next I took a discarded wooden plank and sawed it using a circular saw bench to get 3 boards approximately 16mm thick. Than I planed them a little to get them smooth.
You can and should skip this by buying 7 of the fir pieces mentioned above, but they didn't have enough, so I simply made them myself. Those will be hidden reinforce, so you can take some lower grade wood or even some scrap metal if you wish.
You will need nails to keep the plywood in place, LOTS of screws for the railing (the perimeter support), a saw to make clean precise cuts (I suggest a fretsaw), 120 grit sanding paper and 6 T metal plates. A small hand plane is highly recommended, but it's not required.
The last thing you need is a finish.
I choose cooked linseed oil because it's cheaper, easier to apply, gives the wood a more natural feeling when touched and it's easier to repair than varnish.
The drawback is that it gives no protection to the wood.

Quindi state attenti.
This is the inside. As you can see, the plywood was cut in the corner to make space for the leg. Note that you can put the plywood in only from the underside of the table due to the bolts.

The underside.
Once you've cut the plywood, it's time to cut the supports to fit and round wood edges using the hand plane or the sandpaper.
Lastly, screw them to the apron.

My advice is to use about 1 screw every 20cm, and add some at the ends. The screws will be heavily loaded, so be wise and use your judgement to avoid splitting the wood by using too many screws or using too few and compromise the structural integrity of your table.
Take into account the length of the screws too: they should go at least 1cm and a half into the apron.

In this picture you can see how the rails meet the legs. The rails must be cut to fit.

Dettaglio su come le gambe incontrano i supporti.
Next, attack the reinforce beams to the underside. Strengthen the joints using the T plates.

Nail down the plywood to the rails.
Now pass the sandpaper over all the apron, legs and rails. This is necessary to make the wood very smooth, and to get rid of any bump or scratch you've made during the building process.
Now apply your finish of choice. Congratulations, your table is ready for use!
Continues here with the removable tabletop.

Congratulazioni, il tavolo è pronto all'uso!
Prosegue qui con la superficie rimovibile.

Gaming Table 2: Apron and Legs

Continues from here.
Once I got the lumber, I put the basic frame together.
I started by joining the legs with the short apron pieces using white glue (vinilic glue) and 4 dowels.
If you're unfamiliar with woodworking, I suggest to pay a visit to woodgears, an excellent site to learn many interesting things that can be done with wood. It has loads of plans too.
Next, I drilled the legs and the long apron rails to match. I then proceded to fasten the apron rails to the legs using carriage bolts with hex nuts, washers and split-washers.
Continues here.

The main structure.
The head of the bolts. They have a square metal part under the heads.
How the bolts are fixed inside.
Note: those are 10 mm thick, 12 cm long bolts, and they seem tiny compared to the frame.
The short rail. Note that the wood has no holes in it: the dowels don't go all the way through the wood. (by the way, I used four 5 cm long, 8 mm thick beech dowels for each leg).

Gaming Table 1: get the lumber

I bought the wood for the gaming table! Wohooo!!!
Near my home it's rather difficult to find good lumber retailers. The wood is usually very pricey (and often crooked) and the sellers rather rude.
Luckily I found a local bulk retailer that sells wood to carpenters and bricklayers, Incerti Legnami. They have mainly fir, and the lumber is rather rough. Fortunately, they have a lot of machines to cut, smooth and impregnate the wood, so I asked them to plane a couple of boards.
The service was truly outstanding, considered that I bought only 3 planks. Most bulk retailers would have dismissed my request as too small to be worth it, while they were very kind and tried to give me the cheapest option out of all the possible ones. They even let me choose personally the lumber, and that allowed me to get the most straight and good looking boards.

Now, onto the lumber dimension:

  • 2 planks 96 x 19 x 1360 mm
  • 2 planks 96 x 19 x 2010 mm
  • 4 legs 85 x 80 x 780 mm
Dimensioni del legno:
  • 2 tavole 96 x 19 x 1360 mm
  • 2 tavole 96 x 19 x 2010 mm
  • 4 travetti 85 x 80 x 780 mm

The wood cost me 30 Euros (planing and sawing to dimension included), including VAT (21%). Considering that at the Brico superstore I would have spent between 80 and 90 Euros for the exact same material, I can conclude to be fully satisfied. Next post: assembly!

Prossimo post: l'assemblaggio!

Tutorial: Homemade Hex Space Gaming Mat

In this tutorial I want to share with you my latest work: the construction of a hex space gaming mat for Full Thrust. Before you start I must warn you: this project is extremely simple and inexpensive, but very time consuming. You'll use roughly 6 hours per square meter (4 if you can use a large table and 150 poker chips).

Materiale occorrente:

Required materials:
- Non-woven black mat (found at a hobby shop at 2 €/m or at garden shops)

- Poker Chips (unknown price, I got 'em for free).
- UniPosca bianco (2-3€).

- White marker (I suggest a water-based opaque one).

Lay the mat on a table. If you do not use a workbench, protect the surface with old newspapers (sometimes the color go through the mat).
Place the chips in the more compact way possible: each one has to touch the surrounding 6 chips.

Now mark the felt with dots.

Take the chips away. You'll have loads of dots on the mat. They should define a hex pattern.

Now connect the dots with... yes, more dots!

US Marines in MARPAT camo

US Marines in MARPAT camo (Empress Miniatures).

I choose this very unusual camouflage because I think digital patterns has a distinct ultra-moden feel.

First, I basecoated with Vallejo Iraqi Sand.
Then I washed the mini with Burnt Umber (an artist Watercolor).
Last, I dabbed tiny spots of Vallejo Flat Earth, GW Graveyard Earth and GW Bleached Bone on the mini.

For the Woodland MARPAT I simply added more spots with Vallejo German Field Grey WWII and Vallejo Green Grey.

For the bases, I glued sand on the washers; than I painted it with cheap Burnt Umber acrilic craft paint.
Next step, I drybrushed Mustard and then Ivory.
Finally, I glued some cheap yellow kitchen sponge and painted it Ivory and German Field Grey.

Successivamente ho dato senape e avorio a pennello asciutto.

Tutorial: Washing the Miniatures

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The first thing I always do when I start a miniature, is to wash it.
I know it seems a futile and boring operation, but for me it's the key to a better gluing.

For this tutorial I decided to use the Dragoe, an impressive mini made of 20 parts. This model will be a tough one to glue together, mainly due to the high amount of fine details and tiny pieces it's made of.
Prendete tutti i componenti del modello e metteteli in un contenitore a chiusura ermetica.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First, you should take all the pieces and  put them into an hermetic container.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Take the strongest dish cleaner you can find and pour a spoon of it on the model parts.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fill the container with hot water, putting it directly on the miniatures parts. (Note: in case of plastic or resin pieces, use warm water to avoid bending or melting the minis).
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Put the lid on and wait at least for a day.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rinse the model thoroughly with clean water, than let it dry completely in a hot place (ideally on the heater).

That's it. A simple and effective way to clean completely a model.

Tutorial: How to Make Your Own Sculpting Tools Handles

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some time ago I made some sculpting tips using this guide.
I fixed 'em to an hand driller, but it's time to have some stand-alone sculpting tools.
First, take an old, worthless brush, a cutter, an hand driller and a cyan-akrilate glue.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cut the metal tip using the cutter.
Forate il pennello sulla punta.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Drill a hole in the tip of the headless brush.
Spargete la colla sul foro appena praticato.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Put a drop of glue in the hole.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Insert the sculpting point into the hole and let the glue take hold on it.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That's your sculpting tool completed!

Tutorial: Cheap and Simple Hedge

Lasciatele asciugare.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now that I decided to use the 1/72 scale for my Operation Squad games, I'll need proper scenery.
I don't have much time, so here's what I made.

Materials: green sponge, green wood saw (flock), base (either plastic or cardboard will work). Glue: PVA (white glue).

Cut sponge and bases, than glue'em together.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Squeeze the white glue on the hedge.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Spread it around with a cheap brush.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Put the hedge into a container with the green wood saw.
Fate ruotare il recipiente per qualche secondo.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Roll the container for a bit.
Estraete la siepe e mettetela ad asciugare.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Take out the hedge and let 'em dry.

Tutorial: basing Impetus Romans

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yesterday I was basing the first batch of Polibian Romans (I-II century BC) when I asked myself: should I make a tutorial?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First of all paint the soldiers and divide them in groups of the right dimension, trying to achieve a nice composition. There's nothing worse than to begin basing and discovering halfway to have shortage of minis.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Take your base, in my case it's a 4x8 cm rectangular MDF piece.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Squeeze a generous amount of white glue onto the base.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Spread the glue using an old brush, trying to obtain a uniform coverage.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Spread the glue on the upper face of the mini's base, taking it from the point the mini will be glued upon.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Glue all the figs in this way, than add some bark to simulate rocks.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Submerge the base into your favorite basing material (brown sawdust, in my case).
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Let it dry and repeat the whole process untill all the army is based. The picture you can see above is the result of a 20 minutes work (ok, it's a terrible light, but I was in a hurry!). When all has dried up you can add some bushes or some grass to "green up" the scene.
